DAC/AMP for Sennheiser HD650

Yoo Song Won

I just need to get a DAC/AMP for my Sennheiser HD650s.

Do you guys have any reccomendations?

I rather it be quite cheap around the £100 range up to £200 absolute max. I really would prefer it if it were around the £100 range though as it it's anymore, I would have to wait until Christmas which I rather not.

Thanks.

1. Basement bargain... Turtle Beach DSS2. Find it used. $40 here, in Toronto ??.

2. $600 Canadian!? Yeesh. Maybe it's cheaper across the pond.  SoundBlaster X7. Reviewed here at Head-Fi dot org

3. Creative Lab's slightly more modest amp. No virtual sourround sound feature (so I'm shying away from it)... G5 a possible contender?

My 2 cents...

I recommend staying away from all of these

Interesting, spwath. I chose the DSS2 because it's dirt cheap & met my needs (TOSlink; Dolby decoding; surround-sound virtualization; I can't detect any background hiss with my 47-year-old-ears & headphones). May I ask -- why would you shy away from these options?  Strictly curious...

Schiit has excellent products, and the only reason I didn't buy them is that the don't do Dolby decoding into surround sound (and such ilk [I like the effect on my XBox1 console]). Schiit has a fascinating business philosophy that I want to support.  Their modular approach to the technology is also noteworthy.  If Yoo Song Wong goes with the Schiit option, he'll be happy (and perhaps even future proofed for a bit).

Anyway, there's my 3 cents.

Head-Fi did a sub-$100 (US?) review on different portable headphone amps.  2012 review, so the prices have changed.

Anyway, fyi eh....  Portable Amp Shootout (2012 article)
