Hey guys,

Any ideas for a good upgrade to my pc. It was built with an old cpu,ram and motherboard.

I have a 500w power supply and am looking to upgrade to kaby lake or sky lake. Also I have a relatively small budget (~$200).

I fly in x-plane 10 and need the ram/cpu that can handle it.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

What's your budget?

EDIT: I'm dumb

Wait for Ryzen 3, and get the lowest end one of those with a cheap B350 motherboard.

 + 8GB of DDR4-2400

With that budget I would look at going used, possibly something like a 2500k based system. You can't fit a decent new system in that budget.

Also what PSU?

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

$200 in which currency? Do you only need a motherboard, CPU and RAM?

You could probably fit in a G4560, that's about it. A $200 budget is tiny. Might be better off finding something from a previous generation and used.

And what's your current system?

  • 2 weeks later...

I found a risky build proposition with an i5 6400 overclock and an asus z170 k.

The risk involves flashing an older bios(note that flashing  a new bios or any is also a risk) to overclock the processor over intel's intended speeds

I found this asus z170 board(new) that comes down to 57$ with rebate @ http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-Z170-K-Desktop-Motherboard-Intel-Z170-Chipset-Socket-H4-LGA-1151-/291915797589?hash=item43f7899455:g:fYcAAOSwax5YnNuP

Many guides can can be found here http://overclocking.guide/asus-z170-non-k-overclocking-guide/  .

with the link for the oc bios for the z10k board sold above http://overclocking.guide/download/asus-z170-k-non-k-oc-bios/

i found this cpu for 160 and 150http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i5-6400-SR2BY-2-70GHZ-6MB-8GT-s-LGA-1151-Socket-H4-Quad-Core-CPU-/142393543175?hash=item2127510a07:g:tBsAAOSwVm5ZASoy#viTabs_0

You can find ram for around 60$ and there is nothing you can do since the prices have spiked up.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OQY10L4/?tag=pcpapi-20

If I were you, I would increase the budget and go with a r5 1400 and b350

There are also plenty of videos that show how to OC the processor

150$ 1060 3gb@2.1ghz

in my opinion with 200 bucks you are probably better off with previous generations as others mentioned

http://www.x-plane.com/desktop/system-requirements/

Dual Core, 2.5 GHz or faster processor

4 GB of RAM

A video card with at least 1 GB of VRAM.

this minimum is pretty easy to beat with 200, but one thing you didn't mention is your gpu, do you have one or are you planning to use integrated? that's a huge difference.

if you have a gpu that can run the program no problem, I would say 2 or 3 generation older i5 and 8gb ddr3

if you don't mind used parts, something around these could work:

Thanks, The only problem is I have 3 HDD's and 3 SSD's so I need 6 SATA ports... Any ideas?

Get a pcie sata 3 "extender" to add more connections

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-PCI-E-Express-SATA3-SATA3-0-6Gb-s-eSATA-SATA-III-Card-USA-Seller-/291400242162?hash=item43d8ced3f2:g:m38AAOSwqBJXV4rv

or there is usb 3 to sata 3 adapters and docks like this  if you can't use pcie
