Is it Worth Buying a Floppy Drive for Old Games?

Hi, I'm interested in more retro PC gaming (80s and 90s), but I don't have the money or space to buy a vintage system. I was wondering if it was worth buying a floppy drive from ebay or something, and then using DOSBox to run any games I get. I know you can get some games as abandonware online, but there are many games that I am interested in that still have valid copyright claims. Is it worth spending some money on a floppy drive to play these games, or should I do something else?

Thanks!

As long as the drive works with DOSBox, as well as the games, it should be fine. I would personally just get an old computer specifically to do this. Something from the mid-late 90s should work (depending on the games) and would be better suited.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

If you can get a working one for very cheap then sure, but there are ways to get most of those games from online stores like gog. Make sure you want to play a specific game that can only be found on floppy before you spend money on potentially useless legacy hardware.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

How do you get floppy drive to work if you don't have "vintage system" in first place?

This scenario only works only if you still have LGA775 or AM2/+ or even older system, after that most motherboard no longer have floppy drive socket, unless you are talking about floppy drive usb, and it's often not working like it should be.

Btw what games you want to play?
