Every half hour or so my screen freezes. It usually happens when I am running a graphics intensive program. The intensive program crashes, then within 30 seconds or so windows becomes unresponsive(and audio stops working), and the only thing I can do is hard reset. I have tried waiting it out, and after three hours it was still frozen.

Maybe you could get some more information out of a hardware monitoring program...but I agree...sounds like some type of hardware lock.  When you leave it be after it freezes, do the fan still remain at a high speed, or do they slow down (see if the temps are still high if the CPU/GPU are still crunching away)?

That is common laptop problem, most laptop that have separate GPU, after some time, connection between GPU core (die) and GPU board weakens out (because intens heat), and when you start some heavy 3D task, it is too weak to handle it.

It is very similar as desktop GPUs (if you ever heard about baking GPUs, Linus did video about that), you can try to fix it in some computer service, but try to find some service with decent reputation, because depending how good they are, your laptop might work for next 2-3 weeks or 2-3 years. In my country that costs around 60$, but i dont think it is worth if service is above 120$.. (because it might work for only 1 month more)
