So I was given an old server (with no drives) and it's an HP Invent HSTNS-5105 with an Intel Xeon 5120 dual core and 2 whopping Gigabytes of ram.

I want to make use of this but I'm not exactly sure how. I don't have any hard drives with operating systems that would work with it.

I have a main computer with 32Gb of Ram and a 6700k but I don't like to stress it hard.

I figure with this server I could have some kind of system to run things 24/7. It has some form of RAID configuration for 4 drives. I know this may be a stupid thread/question but is it even worth throwing money at to replace the drives and add a second Xeon? I want to make use of it but I'm not sure how.

Thanks

Depends on the use you would get out of it. Of course it would be a nice thing to have, and that may be reason enough for you to "upgrade" it, but it's really a question for your self, just take into account if you have the extra money, how much you would use it, and what you would use it for. That said, I personally would do it, you can do quite a few nifty things on server boxs, like TS3 servers, home NAS, Plex server, and the odd gaming servers.

I think it would be fun to revamp and get in working condition but if it's going to break the bank to get into working condition I don't think It would be of best use.

a gaming server is about the only thing I would use it for.

another question if I made a website for a business I help run, would I need the server to keep it online 24/7 if I did it myself?

from what i remember the LGA771 CPU line up wasn't very power efficient

and for a dual core system, it's not that great.....

probably not worth using

****SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH IT'S REALLY TERRIBLE*****

Been married to my wife for 3 years now! Yay!
