Swapping boards

This is a real noob question but I am replacing my mobo (MSI Pro Carbon) with a different brand (ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero) can I just pull my nvme boot drive out of the old and install it in the new board or do I have to do a clean install of windows? Really disappointed that it's come to this as I am very happy with MSI and this boards performance but I don't want to wait for an RMA and go without my rig, I have found no explanation other than my PCIe x8 slot being defective and I'm all in on my second GTX 1080 so I guess I will have an opportunity to build another rig with a 1700x or something when the board comes back.

ive done this in the past where i pulled my laptop hdd with win10 - and used it as my desktops boot drive

it works

 

BUT 

it takes a long time for it to try to work out the drivers before you can get into windows

then once you finally get into windows you can iron it out further by removing old drivers or doing a "Reset" from the control panel to do a fresh reinstall
