HD558 - amp lowering bass ? confused now really.

Guest

I have HD558 headphones with 50 ohm output impedance.

On my onboard they sound bassy and I get no issues with onboard sound but anyway I decided to try DAC/AMP

So I got BlasterX G5 which has 2.2 ohm output impedance from amp and it made my headphones almost bassless while connected to amped output.

Same with Blaster E5.. exactly the same output impedance and same thing happened, getting almost no bass.

Now.. I tried plugging the headphones in to line out and bypassing AMP using only DAC.. and wow, the bass is back ! on both E5 and G5

But why did I buy dac/amp combo then ?

I dont get it.

How can amp actually remove bass from my headphones ? Is that actually normal ?

I have an answer for myself... based on what I heard on headphones discord.

Line out on both G5 and E5 has actually higher output impedance ! Only amped output is rated for 2.2 ohm and makes the headphones sound like they are supposed to.

wait do you own both a G5 and E5? If so, then why?

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

I was trying whether E5 has different surround (as they use SBX Pro instead of BlasterX Acoustic Engine)

And based on my test both are identical just different name of software

E5 is going back to store today
