Is 1080 ti worth the money?

Hi, I was wondering if 1080 TI is worth the money? Or should I just go with 1060 and spend the rest on HTC VIVE? I have enough money for 1080 ti but not sure if it worth extra 500$

1060 doesn't provide the best VR experience but the 1080ti will be the best for VR unless you have a CPU bottle neck

what games do you play?
What kind of monitor resolution do you play on?

How much do you value a high performance gaming PC?

Do you make a ton of money or is it a stretch for you?

 

there are a lot of factors that go into buying a ~$700 graphics card.

CPU: i7-7700k (5.0ghz, 1.312v)

GPU(s): Asus Strix 1080ti OC (~2063mhz)

Memory: 32GB (4x8) DDR4 G.Skill TridentZ RGB 3000mhz

Motherboard: Asus Prime z270-AR

PSU: Seasonic Prime Titanium 850W

Cooler: Custom water loop (420mm rad + 360mm rad)

Case: Be quiet! Dark base pro 900 (silver)
Primary storage: Samsung 960 evo m.2 SSD (500gb)

Secondary storage: Samsung 850 evo SSD (250gb)

 

Server build:

OS: Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS (though will probably upgrade to 17.04 for better ryzen support)

CPU: Ryzen R7 1700x

Memory: Ballistix Sport LT 16GB

Motherboard: Asrock B350 m4 pro

Cooler: Cooler master hyper 212 evo

Storage: 2TB WD Red x1, 128gb OCZ SSD for OS

1060 is fine as most VR games are not very demanding. Maybe in 2 years but the 1080ti will be old

I have 1080 Ti because I game at 4k. It was a massive step up from my GTX 980.  What resolution would you be using the 1080 Ti at? 1080p would be a huge waste. I would only get the 1080 Ti for 144hz 1440p, Ultrawide 1440p and 4K. Anything less a GTX 1070 would be great. 

 

Now if you wanna get the GTX 1060 its solid for 1080p and 1440p@60fps so if you really think you would enjoy the Vive go for it. Its a matter of personal taste. I personally do not like VR as it makes me sick.

No, the 1080ti is not worth the money.

Unless you have a need to be on the bleeding edge of desktop graphics.

If you have to ask whether its worth it, 1080ti is not the graphics card you should buy.

 

You either know you need the card for specific task, or you just want it caz you have cash to burn.

the 960 runs almost everything with reprojection, still very enjoyable.

 

the 1080ti allows 200% resolution scaling in almost everything with 90hz - reprojection greatley enhances the visuals, ESPECIALLY those jaggy UE4 titles.

 

If I had to choose between a 1060 and a vive or just a 1080ti I would DEFINITLY take the 1060.

I would ay it all depends on your monitor or whether you are using a VR headset. I game on either my 3440x1440 100HZ Asus or my 4k 60HZ Asus and in lots of modern games at full settings I fail to maintain the full refresh rate. I have a Rift which which gets a solid 90FPS across all games with the 1080TI at full settings but in fairiness it wasn't far off with my 980TI which I had previously. If you dont have/are not planning on buying a beefy monitor I dont think tech and is worth it BUT if you do then there isn't a better option providing you don't need the money for anything else. It may also be worth waiting for Vega at this point :D

I will use 1080 ti for all new games, I don't have budget to buy both 1080 ti and htc vive right now. I want to try resident evil 7 and htc vive. Dont know if 1060 will be sufficient.

 

My monitor is u2414h dell, I also have LG TV 43 inch, 4k ready. I don't know if I can use it with my pc though.

 

But main use for vr would be google 360 video + upcomming official vr games and bunch of stuffs that I want to try with vr. 

 

My grandmom likes to travel, but she is old now and can't do it anymore. She likes to watch netflix all day and youtube allday. Might be a good idea if I buy her vr so she can watch 4k video in 360.

 

Other concern for me is that I don't know if it's a good investment to buy such expensive gear right now, I know it has been released for quite a while now and there will be a wireless version of this.

difficult to say. the vive is very good yes but new ones are coming. google earth VR is amazing and so is Destinations - she will love it

 

there is a wireless 'add-on' for the vive - I do not expect next-gen VR headsets will be wireless but there will be wireless addons. the cable is not an issue.

 

Resident Evil 7 will be fine on a 1060
