Recently my old laptop died dragging the hard drive with it. I am getting a new laptop that has windows 7 and would like to upgrade to windows 10. Would microsoft activate the new windows 10 install from my old laptop. like i said the hard drive is dead so i don't have the product key I would have to call microsoft support or something

Might even work without calling. But if not, just call and you should be able to use it.

after windows 10 anniversary update you could link keys to a Microsoft account. If you want windows 10 on the windows 7 you can use a accessibility setting then upfrade then turn it off.

I did the same thing for my dad's pc going from a new 8.1 install to 10 and it worked fine

If oem then your win10 license died with your laptop. There is a way to still get the free upgrade to win 10. They kept it for disabled people. You can google that, I'm on my phone
