Depends what he needs

if he is doing heavy content creation, the more threads/cores will help him, so get a 1700

if he is just gaming and doing some light streaming maybe, then a 1600 will be fine. you don't even need the X version since they OC to about the same thing.

my b, he didn't give me a budget but he wants to play Bf1, Battlefront and similar titles at 1080p max or at least reasonably high settings.

If he's not doing content creation and/or streaming, then those extra 2 cores from the 1700 won't help him at all, and the reduced clockspeed will be detrimental.

get a 1600X if you plan on keeping it at stock speeds, or a 1600 if you plan to overclock.

while I'm here, I have a 1070 and I've been playing at 3440x1440 for almost 2 years now so I don't have a good point of reference. 1060 6GB good enough for his needs?

at 1080p, definitely.

however, I'd advise you to get an RX 580 / 480, since they're basically the same thing for modern games, and the RX 400/500 series performs better in newer DX12 and Vulkan games.

the 1060 6GB beats out the RX 480 / 580 in older games, but both can run older games at ultra just fine at 1080p, so it doesn't really matter.

Isn't the 580 just a refresh?
