Memory OR a Quad Core

Go to solution Solved by Ky_GG,

And so it is settled, RAM I shall.

Also I do love my word documents (not a fan of cat videos tho).

I usually game programme or do some level editing.

Yo guys, I just waned to ask a question in regards with my rig.

Here are the specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 4.0 GHZ

GPU: MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr Edition

Memory: 4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHZ

PSU: E.V.G.A 450W 80 Plus bronze

HDD: Western Digital 1TB 7200RPM

Motherboard: ASUS H81M-C

Now on to the question.

I have enough money to buy 8 Gigs of RAM or a QUAD core (AMD Athlon X4 860K).

Should I change my processor or my RAM?

Tell me more

The FM2+ platform is effectively dead and the Athlon X4 860K is basically the top end for that socket (well, barring the A series APUs). The Pentium G3258 you have is near the bottom of the LGA1150 platform and even moving up to a Core i3 would get you more performance overall than the Athlon X4.

Plus you're going to have to spend more money getting a new board anyway to go along with the processor. 4GB of more RAM would set you back like $30.

Heck if you were willing to spend money on a new board and processor, go upgrade the processor on your current system platform and get some extra RAM while you're at it.

no, no I did not troll.

I just wanted to know if it would really be a downgrade if I did change processors (of this I know not).

your mobo has an LGA1150 socket

the athlon runs off of a mobo with an FM2 socket, which is on paper inferior to LGA1150 in just about every way, and would also imply the need for you to actually spend money on a mobo as well.

4GB ram and a GTX970...  that is like the painful mismatch from hell right there..

4GB ram is okay for people making word documents or browsing for cat videos, not the kind of place you'd expect a GTX970 ;)

Ikr I need to change quick, so should it be RAM or CPU?

If you want to upgrade to that Athlon you must buy new motherboard too because it's different socket, manufacturer etc. Your current CPU (Pentium) has same if not better performance than that Athlon + your current motherboard is much better than motherboards for Athlon. So it would be downgrade in performance + downgrade in future proof/upgrade path

definitely not amd in this case, just get ram. Heck i even wonder how you'd do that with the athlon for $30 to get a board too. (and as already stated, it would be basically a performance downgrade)

What you could do: get now new ram, then save a bit and get another haswell cpu from the lineup, some i3 or i5 or what you can get
