There are same games with suboptimized code that will choke at points regardless of how good your CPU or GPU is.

You just have to be aware of it so that don't get fooled into upgrading.

Hey everyone, I think it's time to sell the old watercooled 290 and I need your help. I currently have a 6500 and 16gb 2133 ram, along with a aio watercooled 290. As of late, I have been heavily into player unknowns battleground, just like everyone else, and it runs alright, until I'm near explosions or am in a pretty heated firefight then I will get massive frame drop. I have been sort of out of the loop for awhile about new GPUs, but I have been looking into the new 580s. Now I know they'r basically a 480 refresh, but I was wondering if that would be a good upgrade? I did look at some benchmarkets of the 480 vs the 290 and it seems like they'r about the same fps wise.

You won't feel much of a upgrade if jumping from 290 to 580. I'd either take GTX 1070 or wait and save for upcoming Vega/Volta GPUs.

Or you can go for somethig like a 1060 from nvidia, if youre into that option, at this point in time their about the same thiugh. But it depends on how much you are willing to spend, if ~400, totally go for a 1070.

@Fluffybakon there is no reason to get a GTX 1060 or RX 480 / 580 if he has an R9 290. Those are little more than sidegrades.

He should get a GTX 1070 or wait for one month for AMD Vega.

Also @trentklein you say that in the game playerunknownbattlegrounds you only get fps drops in big firefights. Make sure it is not a CPU limit etc, before you upgrade your GPU. You can do this by turning down graphics settings and checking if the frame drops go away. If they go away you know it's the GPU that's choking.
