gpu-z reporting gpu running at x2 3.0

MrJarhead

in gpu z it says the max my gpu supports is of course x16, but says its running at x2, even when i stress test it, whats the issue here? my girlfriends reports her 970 is at x16, i have no other pcie slots being used.

this is on a gtx 1080.

Sometimes it glitches on me too.

On my computer, sometimes it will say its using PCIe 2.0 despite it not even being connected to the 2.0 slot.

I wouldn't worry about it much, most likely it is a glitch.

Nvidia cards won't function with less than 8x lanes.

well if a gpu is running at x2 compared to x16, there will be a sever decrease in performance am i right, anyway ive moved my gpu to the x8 slot and its saying its running x8, so why the x16 slot is saying x2 il never know.

So have you ran a benchmark in both slots to confirm that?

Some boards require a change in the bios to change some slots.

What board?

Ok the gigabyte z97x I assume.

So the very top green slot is running at 2x. No other pci device is being used nor an m.2 card correct?

it is yes, and nope, i took my wifi card and my sound card out and gpu-z was saying 2x still, however, nvidia control panel was saying x16.

however with my sound card and wifi card in with the gpu in the 8x slot, it does say 8x in gpu-z so gpu-z must be bugged.

Board could be messed up, did it do it with the last card or is this a new build? Bios updated?

bios was on the latest version, my girlfriends 970 says its at x16 on her motherboard, ive tried reinstalling the bios and it didnt help, its just odd how gpu-z says it was running at x2 and the control panel said x16.

anyhow i am seeing massive fps increase on x8, very odd.

Well if it wasn't running at its speed it doesnt really matter what the control panel says. I'd reseat the card and see but I imagine you've already done that. Board is prolly faulty unless something is lodged in the slot.

the sata ports on this motherboard or poorly placed, my gpu literally sits on top of them, i wonder if this is causing it to not sit flush.

Very top green slot right? Rma the board. Or just use the other slot.

mick i tried a smaller gpu and guess what? it reported its full speed, which means the stupid sata ports are blocking full size gpus from sitting flush, ive complained and i will never purchase a gigabyte item again.

Doubt it has anything to do with "full size" cards. Prolly just that pcb layout. As almost all mobo's are like that.

you know what i mean, the design is poor, why would you stick the ports there knowing full well a gpu is going to be right next to it, its 100% causing my pcie speed issue.

when i put the 1080 or 970 in there is no distinct click when its inserted where as with the smaller amd card there is and here is the image of gpu-z with the amd gpu.

as you will see its running at full speed.

Well could file down the sata plastic a bit. All of my boards are like that but I can't say I've seen the problem before.

figired you aren't the only one with this problem with this board unless something else is effecting it too. Such as the case.

its deffo the pcie slot mate, the 970 is having the same issue, the only gpu that isnt is the small cheap amd card thats small enough so it doesnt hit the sata ports.
