So I have 2 1080's that I want to water cool. I know it is unnecessary but I want to get into custom water cooling. The thing is I am in love with my Kraken X62 and do not want to have my CPU part of the custom loop. First, am I a moron for wanting to do this/ has anyone heard of someone just cooling the GPU's? Second are there better alternatives to a custom loop? I have done some research into adding a AIO cooler to a GPU but I haven't found one that will look good as some EKor bitspower waterblocks.

I actually did just my 1070 so no you aren't a moron, and it was probably the best decision I made for my computer.  It's really a hobby and the side effect is the results.  I'm probably $400 into cooling a $350 1070 just because it's so fun! But it resulted in a card that can hit 2200Mhz core that doesn't throttle down! And a  +600 on the memory clock.

As for alternatives I have no clue what cards you have but I found that a re paste helped temps and a shunt mod helped performance before I left air cooling and went full retard putting ice water in a custom loop.

Thirdly, nice setup! Red is the superior color!

Thanks man! The cards are Asus Strix 1080's. That's a pretty nice OC. How many radiators did you use?

Ermmm. 0rads

im using a hybrid of tec coolers and ice water

so the cooler has about 4 gallons of water in it and 2 gallons or more of ice. Then the heatsink outside the case is a tec cooler to help keep temps stable when I can't be bothered to get any ice.  My CPU is also in the same loop as of about a few weeks ago since it made no sense to not put in in the loop over an air cooler.IMG_1496.thumb.JPG.46345fb06c3e125196fb3a1f57b76033.JPG

Ek has the blocks. You're concern should be where are you putting the radiators and if you'll have the room. You have that CPU rad taking up all that space and not contributing.

Not crazy to just put the Gpu's under.  I would personally sell the cpu AIO and get a waterblock for that too.  Otherwise it's kinda like running dual loops which just isn't ideal in a scenario like this.  Cpu would have way too much of the rad space for it's actual heat output compared to the 2x1080's

I can fit 2 more 240/280 mm rads in the case. One in the top and one in the bottom.

The thing is I really like the way the AIO looks. It's my favorite part of how the system looks. Now that may change once I start with the custom loop.

Isn't that the Maximus ix with the integrated EK block?  That and a CPU block make for a sweet looking loop IMO but it's all up to you!

This is the MAximus IX Formula it has the integrated watercooling for the heatsinks. The Maximus ix Extreme is the one with the integrated block. I bought it thinking I would do a sick custom loop with the motherboard, cpu and gpu's all on the loop, but there is just something about the pump that I really enjoy.

That being said if I can't fit the 2 extra rads in the case I will ditch the AIO and add the CPU to the loop. At least that is what i am leaning toward.

I was never too clear on Asus's naming scheme there, that's what I was thinking it was.  I like the one you've got more, something about the separate blocks is just sweet.

I'd ditch the aio. Easier, cleaner and better temps overall. Can't you fit a 360 in the front or just a 240?

mine isn't a good example but there's no way I couldn't have kept my h100i up top of my rig.

Nice system and loop! Yes, I can fit a 360 in the front.

If you can fit it, 360 front intake, 280/240 top exhaust. The two 140s on bottom should already be intake and the rear 140 I think should be exhaust. Unless you wonna go a bit more and add another 240 on the bottom. Two will be plenty though.

  • 1 month later...

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to thank every that posted here to help me out/ show off my rig. lol. I just finished my custom loop and absolutely love it. I ran it over night to check for leaks and I have found none. I have yet to overclock as I am running benchmarks post loop with a stock config (really just to have those numbers). But my cpu under load is 52 degrees C. My gpu's are 42 and 39 under load. Again those numbers are all pre oc.

Thanks again.
