That's only really true if you've got the overhead for it...if you need to pay extra for a cooling solution in order to be able to overclock it, it's probably better to roll that money into a more expensive CPU (if you're buying used).

I use an i3 and it's pretty much been okay...it's not that bad...if I didn't already have a 970 I'm happy with I'd put the money into a new graphics card.

Really it depends on what you need it for and how often you want to upgrade (if you don't want to keep having to make incremental adjustments then spend more for more expensive components that you don't have to swap out as often. I think that depends on how much you enjoy tooling about with it and whether or not you have more time than money or vice versa).

Not really. My H105 is going on 3 years old, still keeps my 4790k running at 4.8GHz cooler than a lot of 4790k idle at while at stock speeds using the stock cooler. 100 bucks isn't bad for that ability, and I plan on transfering it to my 1700 once I get it.

The differance between a stock clock speeds and overclock are usually right there with the next tier of hardware. That's why overclocking is so popular.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Yes on Amazon it says there is thermal paste. And i know this might be a silly question, But to sort out the cable management in my pc is it fine to disconnect my hdd and ssd from my mobo to sort out the cables?

Yes, it's okay...just keep note of what's plugged in where, so that you plug them back into the same sockets.

But that's kind of what I mean...OP may not have a water cooler.

OP doesn't need one, they have a locked chipset.

Why I think it's silly to pay extra for an unlocked CPU. But I do tons of silly things so don't judge.

Okay...I thought he was talking about buying unlocked CPUs.

Would you say that a good price for the 4790k be? And what other cpu would you recommend for my lga 1150 mobo? I dont mind used.

Okay, sure thing...I didn't see that.

I'd say go for whatever you can afford that works for you whether it be unlocked or not. You don't have to overclock just because your CPU's unlocked nor do you have to avoid getting an unlocked CPU if your mobo won't allow overclocking...if the price and spec is good for you it's fine and if you do get an unlocked CPU then you have the option to transfer it to a new motherboard where you can overclock sometime in the future, so...depending on the where you are on the upgrade curve (and how steep it is for you) it might be worth leaning towards an unlocked chip even if you can't currently overclock it...

...as for water cooling...if you're planning on migrating it all to a board where you can overclock sometimes soon it might be worth picking up a water cooler but be aware they do have a lifespan and can leak, so it might be worth going with air for the time being.

Also, it might be worth getting an aftermarket air-cooler (if you're not overclocking or planning on moving to an overclocking board at least some time soon) purely for the reduced noise (I personally can't stand the noise of a stock cooler...one of the things that got me into P.C. cooling as a hobby in the first place).

CPU support-list here: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/H81M-E33.html#support-cpu

Also, it says it does overclock... "OC Genie 4: Overclock in 1 Second"

You need a Z board for unlocked Intels. It also says it doesn't support the 4790k, odd.

Confirmed... ;)   It'll overclock Pentiums.

Yup, but only the Pentium. Obviously not a consideration for gaming.

What websites are good for buying used pc parts either than ebay?

I use Ebay, just watch that you buy from a good seller. I also have had really good luck with the classifieds here.

EDIT: Also I would look into why the 4790k isn't listed. Probably just a Bios update but worth looking into.

Unless you really need a fast processor right now, I'd just go for an i5 and put the money you save towards a future Motherboard/RAM/Processor upgrade...but that's me.

I don't really know much about Xeons but if you can pick one up for cheaper than the equivalent (in terms of performance) Intel Core, then it might be worth doing.

To be honest, if you're not going to be using it for anything more taxing than gaming I'd go for an i5 and just put the money you save into the graphics card.

i5 should be good for general multitasking and it's fine for most general gaming scenarios...even the very few newer games coming out that recommend i7 for ultra high detail, are more or less still just as good with i5 and the graphics card is still going to be more important in terms of general gaming performance.

If you need to do lots of video processing or high def streaming etc. then an i7 might be worth looking at.
