So a quick synopsis of my situation:

I have 2 PCs and a laptop, and an Office 365 subscription. I have pointed all my personal folders (Documents, Pictures, etc) from within the C:\Users\Skeeter folder at OneDrive folders. It works great, all my files are backed up and I can chop and change between my PCs and laptop and my files are always there. Happy face.

But, more and more Games are starting to use the Documents folder for saves, replays, etc. While nice to have these sync across machines, its a PITA when it does it while playing!. I have seem my ping shoot through the roof as OneDrive decides it wants to sync my recently updated save file. Sad face.

So, what I'm looking for is either:

a) a Cloud Storage solution that will automatically disable sync when I run a full screen application, meaning it won't try and sync while I'm playing a game. Or a way to hack this in somehow.

b) a Cloud Storage solution that can be set to only sync on log on/log off or boot up/shut down, meaning it never syncs while the PC is in use. Or a way to hack this in somehow.

I like my 1TB of OneDrive storage, but I'll happily jump ship and pay for another solution if it solves this issue. The convenience of having files and game saves synced across devices is being rapidly eroded by being unable to play games on those devices.

Thanks!

Nothing's going to run off requirement A, because there's no real safe (from a security standpoint) way of determining if an app is full screen or not. At best all it can do is check what other windows there are, their position, and sizes. And no, you can't go "is window size == screen size" because that doesn't necessarily mean the app went full screen exclusive.

So far from what I looked at, no cloud storage service allows you to manually schedule periodic syncing. It syncs the moment there's a change. You could try setting OneDrive to a low priority in Task Manager. You could also prevent it from starting and launch it when you want to sync, then close it when you're done.

The benifit of OneDrive (or any software that is setup normally) is i don't need to think about it. Having to manually sync means i will forget. I could manually pause syncing, but that's not that easy on my living room PC which is controlled through Steam BPM with a pad.

I was hoping that Game Mode might help me, but I've been testing that tonight and it still syncs whenever there's a change.

1 minute ago, Skeeter said:

So it's possible to kill and restart OneDrive using a command that can be used in a .bat file

Now to see if i can find a way to run a .bat when a game launches and (likely more complicated) when it exists.

It would involve a constant check of which processes are running and a whitelist. And then you'll end up doing this:

In the mean time, I found a tool called NetBalancer that might be the answer.

Cheers I'll have a look.

I've also found Razer Cortex Game Booster. It disables processes and services when you launch a game and enables them again when you exit. I just installed it quickly and couldn't see anything for OneDrive but it does pick up my Google Drive sync process and suggests that gets stopped.

Having had an unrelated conversation at work today about cloud storage I've decided to drop OneDrive and move to using Google Drive. And in doing so I can use Razer Cortex to stop and start the Sync service when I launch and close games.

I'll report back on how that goes incase anyone is interested.
