I want to replace Comcast's garbage cable modem. I have no idea which one to get. So many different opinions, and I trust LTTC the most... so please help! :)

I'm using an Asus AC87U for a router, how does everyone feel about that? Should I upgrade or is it okay for a 950 sq/ft apartment. THANKS as always!

Provider: Comcast

US/DS: 105/25

Arris Surfboard 6141 or the 6190 if you plan to upgrade your internet plan.

If I wanted to "future proof" my choice I should go with the 6190? What would be the minimum speed I'd need the 6190 for? Or maximum with the 6141?

6141 max speed is 343Mbps

6190 mas is 1.2Gbps

No minimum needed for either, it's just more of a what makes the most sense.

I was just trying to figure out if the 6190 was overkill... or when it wouldn't be overkill for the available speeds in my area.

DONT get the 6190. There are ping spike issues due to the Intel Chipset in the modem. Its a known issue, Im not sure when the fix will be out, as they think a firmware update should solve the issue. This has been going on for months. Id look at the 6183 if you want to future proof or go with a Docsis 3.1 modem.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

6183 is dead and gone, only refurbished available now.

The 6183 doesn't play with IPv6 at all, I fought with it for months.

They're on the last stage of fixing the issues from my understanding, waiting for the ISPs to put the SW through their internal testing. I'm currently on a Beta build, and all ping issues appear to be worked out. No DNS hanging, etc...

What protocol were you using for iPv6? DHCPv6 or SLAAC? I've gotten mine to work with DHCPv6 on a 6183, no issues.

Generally speaking the more channels you have the better. It deals better with congestion and can compensate for a crowded DOCSIS channel. I'm on a 200 Mbps connection and have the SB6190 (and had the 6183) and did notice the difference between the 83 and 90 during peak hours. Results can and will vary depending on the infrastructure among many other factors.

Looks like retail packaging to me. If there still selling the SB6141 they aint going to stop selling the 6183.

Also you didnt have the IPv6 setting right in your router. There are several standards ISP's can use when deploying IPv6, you have to use the settings your ISP is using.

Fought with IPv6 TWC firmware for months. I switched from the 6183 to the 6190 and it worked with no change in the router.

Sounds to me like TWC is a bunch of dumb asses and It wasnt the modems fault. Because I see this modem suggested on other forums and no one seems to have issues.

Probably, I know they had bad firmware out and never bothered fixing it until the week after I bought a 6190, lol. When you had a dual stack router attached to it and requested DHCPv6 and DHCP addresses it would throw the modem into a constant rebooting loop.

Well now I'm confused... Which modem is everyone recommending I get then? I have to replace this Arris TG862! I want to take a bat to it >:(

6141 if you don't plan to upgrade a whole lot.

6183 or 6190 if you plan to get a good bit of speed upgrade in the future.
