I've been putting together different lists for a new gaming pc. I will be upgrading from an AMD FX6xxx series. I've decided that I will be going the i5 route after some thought about going Ryzen. I've put together what I'm calling a core list. The list doesn't have storage or a graphics card listed, as those are components that I will get later, and I'm planning on using my 1tb HDD and my 970 for now. Eventually I will go ssd, and a 1080. I'm looking for any suggestions on this build. Is it pretty solid, any changes that might be better? I'm looking to order all the parts this week. Feel free to ask any questions or critique as much as possible.

Don't flame me, but I put in RGB ram, and specifically G.Skill because I like the aesthetics of it. And I will probably eventually replace the air cooler with a AIO water cooler down the road when I over clock it. I plan on Overclocking a bit, or as comfortable as air cooling and that setup can handle it.

This rig has 6 cores/12 threads.

PSU with more wattage(for sli 1080 in the future)

The CPU will last an extra 3-4 years due to the core count alone.

I understand that you wanted to go the core i5 route but that WILL need to be upgraded a much sooner than a 1600x.

Air-cooling can handle nearly any overclock until you hit a thermal limit, so don't worry about having to use water-cooling for the most heavy overclock.

Over the Ryzen setup?

The 1600x lags behind the 6700k just a tiny bit and if hes getting a 1080 i doubt hes gonna be gaming at 1080p anyways.

I don't see many of the calculations in games turning over to using more than two threads anytime soon. Most calculations in FPS engines are single-threaded such as those in Frostbite.

Games are starting to use more cores and it being seen all around.

Using more cores doesn't mean that calculations are multi-threaded. Certain physics calls like a building falling, for instance, would benefit from fast, numerous cores since there is a lot to calculate for and it doesn't require the lowest latency to produce an accurate result. A bullet on the other hand requires that the calculations be done on a single core, in sequence, as it travels since passing off to another core would only delay the calculation. Using multiple threads does not indicate that a program's underlying engine is multi-threaded all-around.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to take the advice of getting the i7. It should perform better than the new i5, and it looks like i'll save on the board. As far as gaming which is mainly the only  thing I do. I will be gaming at 1080p until I can get a 1440 monitor, and perhaps one day 4k. But I'm sure by the time I can afford to do 4k gaming, i'll be building a new computer for that.
