Hi,

Just been using the latest version of windows 10, an just exploring the new windows defender. Because usually I use bit defender for Anti Virus and Malwarebytes for anti malware.

Has windows finally stepped up there security in the new windows defender?

I like to hear your thoughts and experiences with windows defender from performance and security.

Cheers.

i use window defender as the only Security on my computer, seems to be working well for me, common sense + window defender is a good combo.

Same here. If you want you can even run Malwarebytes from time to time. So far Defender has been good to me.

As someone who has been working with computers for over 10 years now, I've come to learn that the best security software is CommonSense™. Unfortunately, you can't purchase this, so if you don't have it, and can't learn it, you'll want to use Kaspersky or ESET security.

For those that do have CommonSense™, I recommend Windows Defender and MalwareBytes Premium, because it actively scans for unknown malware, and Defender has come a long way with its' definition-based active scanning.

I use only Win Defender, it's an interestingly polarizing topic for a lot of folks lol. IMO it's MUCH better than it used to be and is a great standalone. The first line of defense will always be common sense, anything that follows good common sense will generally work ok.

Windows Defender has become a lot better, not really if you want any extra protection than the basic AV though.   Windows 10 has very good inbuilt security anyway, and is much more invulnerable to exploits compared to previous versions of Windows.   Windows Defender has pretty solid definitions, and that combined with Windows 10's automatic updates mean you should be pretty secure from most threats.

And unless you want to pay for an antivirus, you won't be getting much better.  In fact probably worse, I dislike free antivirus software because most of them are buggy, cause a slowdown and just add another potential vulnerability and entry point on the machine.  Antivirus is classified as system software, not application software because it accesses such low level system components.  So if malware or a hacker get's a grip of that, you're done for.   And don't think I'm bullshitting either, Symantec, Trend Micro, Kasperksy, Mcafee, AVG are all known in the past 5 years to have patched vulnerabilities that could cause malware to essentially bypass or even 'take over' the antivirus.

You're better off sticking with Windows Defender.  There is a reason why that Mozilla employee denounced antivirus software, and he was right.
