HDD always asks for admin permission

Go to solution Solved by Momenaut,

Okay, I fixed it. I enabled inheritance for all child folders and the problem is gone. There is one teeny weeny nitpicky thing though which is when I enabled inheritance it doubled the amount of permissions in the advanced window that shows inherited from: D:/ and all the permissions that said inherited from: none are still there. Can I delete those without issue? will leaving them there create problems for me if I reformat down the road?

Every time I try to move/delete etc. any file on one of my secondary HDD's it asks for admin permission. This is a problem because I think it's what's stopping some of my other programs from saving files to the drive. I've reformatted many times and the problem is persistent, and as far as I can tell I have full control with my admin account. My current OS is as fresh as yesterday and nothing has been tinkered with.

so I added the context menu hack in that post, but it wouldn't let me use it on the entire drive. I did it on every sub-folder immediately within the drive but I'm still getting the same admin prompts when altering the files.

I should note when I say "wouldn't let me use it" I mean the option simply wouldn't appear in the context menu when I r-clicked on the drive itself.

upon closer inspection of the permissions of the folders I've realized some of the folders have permissions for "Account Uknown(S-1-5-21-963852414-etc." it appears multiple times for some folders with full control or special permissions.... can I just delete those? I'm a little scared to do anything cause last time I fiddled with the permissions I lost access to all the files on the drive...

Yeah you can delete them. That is just the SID of an "unknown to the current install of windows" user. Most likely a user that was created then delete in the current install or if you re-installed Windows over the top of an older install, then transferred out files from the windows.old folder, every user account/group will still have it's SID imprinted on each file.

They are fine to delete, assuming you don't move he drive back and forward between this and another system (if you do you'll have to re-apply the permissions on the next system).

No issues.Give this a read for more info on permissions. Very old, but most of it still applies. This is even better...
