Would a 780 be a waste of money?

swiftsly

Would a GTX 780 be a waste of money with a standard clock i7 2600k (3.4 Ghz) and playing at 1920x1080?  Should I get something else, like a 770?

Nothing is a waste of money as long as you got the money to spend.

Kinda overkill for 1080p imo.

Yeah, that's sort of what I was thinking.  What would you suggest, a 770 or a 760?

I would say you are better of getting a 290.

No, A waste of money is where some spends money on object that is over priced and where they could have gotten a better product for a less price. This point is very subjective.

its not really over kill if you really want the FPS go for it I plan on picking up a 780 ti and most of the time I game at 1080P but then again if you want to save some money go for an aftermarket 290 when they come out neck and neck or 780 beating performance

It would be definitely worth the money, Nothing is really quite "Overkill" for 1080p "Yet" since even some games still give it trouble with keeping stable 60 FPS. It would be a great card especially with the recent price drops.

Hope I could help!

If you have the money, get it. You might want to consider one of these also:http://www.ebay.com/sch/merchant/dream-seller?_nkw=x-star+dp2710&_sacat=&_ex_kw=&_mPrRngCbx=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_sop=12

Or even a second monitor. If not just be happy that you can max out everything at 1080p for the next while.

slick said even a 780 TI in some ridiculous games are still needed in 1080p xD. 780 is like the ultimate 1080p GPU and will preform even on upcoming demanding games

Depends on what games you play. GTX 780 still can't handle well (60+fps) games like Metro 2033 & Crysis 3 with ultra settings

It is not overkill. I game at 1080p at 129hz and I want my frames to stay at 129hz with maxed settings. So I have 2 780's. Even they cant hold 129hz at 1080p on some titles maxed out. It really depends on what kind of gamer you are...

Not at all, overkill speak is BS, many games maxed out won't run properly on lower cards, also it has good memory config. What GPU do you have now? If you're in a situation like I am, when your GPU still gets good results in new games and you want, not need to upgrade. In that case you could just wait for Maxwell.

That uh.. that is not true. If youre a millionaire and you dump every penny you have on twinkies.. is that not a waste of money?

If you are worried about your cpu get a 290x. Mantle i removing ALL CPU bottlenecking meaning your fps with just be sheer gpu horsepower. They even tested an 8350 and showed how the same fps was attained at both 2ghz and 4ghz.

Save $100 and go for the 290, then slap the old gelid cooler on there, or wait for non-ref ;)

Just sliiiiiiiiiggghtly overkill for 1080P unless the games u'll be playing is really not GPU intensive like LoL or something, still worth to get one especially at current price point. Or go for non-ref 290.

Long answer: There are children staring in Africa that could use GPU money

Short answer: Not a waste.

Now you're going to feel guilty, thinking of all the little Africans when you're buying it. Sorry :P

He should probably think of all the African children still using the GTX 400's, and he is privileged to think about the 700's series.

Not only do they have to suffer disease and starvation, but also suffer playing BF4 on 25FPS. How cruel.

Yeah get the 770, it's a great choice.

I just bought a 780 and it can't max out crysis 3 :P Not even near max.

You probably bought a new card already but just a headsup.

GTX 770 would be great. Or go for the 280X or 7970 if you want. Same performance, but the AMD side is slightly cheaper.

I would pick a 290 tbh. So much performance for the price and its slightly faster than a titan and 780. Get a 290 unless you really need ShadowPlay.
