Until I actually buy a new ryzen/mobo set I figure I'd like to finally try overclocking my pc. I've been reading some beginners guides and "how-to" videos on youtube. Before I start this weekend, I wanted to cover my bases and ask some questions.

My current setup is

fx 8320e w/ hyper 212 air cooler

gigabyte 990fxa-ud3

Crucial ballistix 16gb ddr3

Evga 980ti classified 6gb

650w psu (cant remember the model on top of my head if its evga or thermaltake)

My questions would be:

1. Is my aftermarket cooler (and other parts)decent enough to try overclocking?

2. Whats the ideal temps for a gpu/cpu while idle and under load?

3. I saw that MSI afterburner, HWmonitor and cpuz were used a lot. I would assume the temp readings are accurate enough without having to buy extra temp reading tools?

4. Which benchmarking tools should I use to specifically target my cpu? For gpus i saw unigine used.

My goal right now is to just see how much i can get without bumping up the voltages (havent read too much about this part yet), while staying with just the air cooler.

Cant wait for the weekend and hopefully I dont burn the house down.

Yeah the 8320e Hyper 212 evo would run fine even under a modest overclock. I do 100 Mhz increments until it decides to BSOD on me. Then Pull back 50 Mhz at a time until its stable. Thats how I got my A6 3650 to 2.8 Ghz on Air without touching Voltage. Something like the FX 8320e should OC alot higher than my A6 so dont worry about my low gain of 200Mhz on my end

All your parts are good, I would recommend not upgrading to Rysen yet because you'll have to get new RAM to and besides your CPU is pretty decent

ideal temps maybe max 5c than normal

for monitoring

Hwmonitor, CPU z, GPU Z and really for any GPU monitoring software the one that comes with the GPU would be fine (PercisionX for you I believe)

Benmarking tools for CPUs Aida 64 (get the free trail), ROG Realbench, don't get Prime 95 because the newer versions make your CPU really hot, Memtest for RAM (if you OC your RAM use XMP)

about the bumping up voltages your gonna have to or else a OC won't be worth it but with the hyper 212 (which version) just do light OCs

What is the safe temp levels i should be watching out for at idle and under load?

right now im running intelburn test and

Hwmonitor is showing 47c/116f

afterburner shows cpu at 100%

Im about to bump it up again but would like to know what sort of limits i should watch out for temps.
