I'm stuck on what you to use for my PC. I have a laptop that can more than handle 3D software, heavy excel files, and low level gaming. What I want from my desktop, is the best 1080p gaming with the potential to upgrade easily to 4k in the future.

What I can't figure out is, can I use a Ryzen 1700 and achieve relatively the same performance as the i5-7600k or i7-7700k? Or am I giving up too much clock speed just for those extra 4 cores?

For multithreading, ryzen is the way to go. But you're sacrifising clock speeds and IPC. It's well known by now that ryzen is mostly limited by clock speeds, because IPC is there.

Either way, you make a sacrifise. You have to choose what means more to you. 3.9ghz and 8 cores or 4.8-5.0ghz and 4 cores

What is your budget? Is one of these chips a little more than you wanted to spend but you think you may benefit from having the better one and are willing to stretch the budget? Also, I don't think a CUP will help you here.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Auto correct ?

My budget can fit the $350 for an i7-7700k if need be. But if the extra money for it isn't worth it for my needs, then im fine with the i5-7600k.

For 4k, the CPU really doens't matter... with that said, there's no reason to get the inferior 7600k if you can instead get a 7700 (non k) setup for the same price, once you consider the cheaper motherboard and the need for a cooler on the i5.

That's what I'd do if I was in your shoes, get a 7700 with any B250 mobo, it's a great sweetspot.

What do I give up in terms of overclocking by getting the non k instead? It doesn't matter much to me as long as I still get decent performance.

As I said, it doesn't really matter at 4k. You'll be limited by GPUs at first, and then you'll be limited by the lack of 144hz displays. The 7700k is still clocked pretty high (4.0 in quad operation), you won't really lose much at all by going with it VS the K version and OCing that.
