Well, if by backup you mean savegame, it's probably possible

Why not buy it from Steam directly and be certain it will work? Steam just redirects to Rockstar DRM anyways

It's the same game so files are the same, but I'm not sure if it will recognize if you do it. BTW I have a friend that downloaded it with a 2mbps connection =P

but aren't the steam backups like encrypted and sh!t?

Oh, you can't use Steam backups for that, you need to copy all the files from the GTA V folder (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V)

My main concern about doing something like this would be any hidden DRM stuff in your steam backup that would simply result in the social club app not recognizing the files you have and proceeding to download the full game anyway.

CPU -AMD R5 2600X @ 4.15 GHz / RAM - 2x8Gb GSkill Ripjaws 3000 MHz/ MB- Asus Crosshair VII Hero X470/  GPU- MSI Gaming X GTX 1080/ CPU Cooler - Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3/ PSU - Seasonic G-series 550W/ Case - NZXT H440 (Black/Red)/ SSD - Crucial MX300 500GB/ Storage - WD Caviar Blue 1TB/ Keyboard - Corsair Vengeance K70 w/ Red switches/ Mouse - Logitech g900/ Display - 27" Benq GW2765 1440p display/ Audio - Sennheiser HD 558 and Logitech z323 speakers

My brother also used the usb drive of his classmate and inserted it on his laptop. Its GTA 5 and Counterstrike. He was able to download it and the game worked well in his laptop.
