I currently run an A10-7700K with a NVIDIA GTX950 Graphics card. My parents got me the computer a few years ago for Christmas 2014 (I added the Graphics card myself about a year ago), but now I'm older and have more money to spend I'd like to upgrade. I plan on using my existing case, hard drive and a few other components, but the core of the computer will be new.

Planning on getting:

  • Ryzen 5 1500X =£189.96
  • Asus Prime B350M-A =£79.97
  • Single Stick 8GB Crucial DDR4 2400Mhz RAM =£51.99
  • Corsair RM650X Power Supply= £91.97
  • Total = £413.89

I was wondering if those were good components to get for value for money. I read that the 1600 might be better value because it's not that much more expensive than the 1500X (1600 would be £218.99, totalling the build to £442.89) whilst delivering two more cores and better performance. I have the money to get the even higher 1600X (1600X would be £249.90 bringing the total to £473.83), but I plan on using this machine for gaming really and maybe some Photography work for school projects, and I could save money and put that towards getting a new graphics card.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'd recommend the 1600, tons of games do benefit from it. And it's only a little more.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

yes, if you need the extra power get the 6 core. for school and basic task 6 core is overkill, a quad core overclocked 1400 would get the job done.

@nerdslayer1 6 core might be overkill right now. But seeing OP used his previous pc for several years, it might be smart to go for 6 cores. (or moar)

Even now, 6 cores is useful.

I do plan on using this for several years like I did with my current setup.
