Multiple access point question

Izzdy

Hi,

I noticed that my modem(not sure what it is called, an access point maybe) have unused lan port. Can I use that port to create another wifi by plugging another lan cable to a separate access point.

I'm sorry if the terms I used are not correct.

You most likely have a modem router combo. Yes you can connect an AP in to the LAN port to get another WiFi. Just make sure you check that your not running your AP's on the same wireless channels.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Yes, I have done this myself to increase range around the house. Just plug the Ethernet cable into the Modem/Router and the other end of the Ethernet into your AP/Router and it should work just fine!

Hey all,

I just tried plugging in the other router via the unused lan port from my original router.

No internet coming through the new router.

Is there something needed to be fiddled with in order to get an internet connection?

You have to disable all the "router" functions in the second router (turn off DHCP,NAT)

you may have a IP conflict also since the new router is what ive seen trying to get 192.168.1.1 and if you have a combo modem/router they are normal at that IP already. what is the new router model you bought ?

most wireless routers have the function to run as a standalone ap. There should be some tyoe of setting in the router to do it.
