Forgive me, i know nothing about building gaming rigs properly.

I understand that you can run a system with just one 4 pin power connector plugged in but since i want to learn how to overclock in the future, what should i do?

plug 2 cpu power cables at the same time or?

spec:

intel i5 6600k

asus z170-a motherboard

8 gig avexnir 2666mhz ram

evga supernova nex 650G power supply

cooler master hyper ex evo 212

Just plug the 2 4pin cpu cables in from the start. they are tabbed so that they slid in together to act as one 8pin

even if the plugs dont match the connector? i.e. on the one end theres 2 squares and 2 rounded while the other is all rounded

If there are more than one CPU power connectors on the board, you should connect all of them if your PSU has enough cables for it. It's not a necessity, but if your PSU has enough cables for it, connect them.

i just have the 8 pin connector, is plugging two cables ok for that?

Your PSU should have a split 8 pin cable for CPU power (4+4 pin). Plug both parts of the split connector into the 8 pin connector on the board

should both parts of the connector have matching pins or does that not matter?

they should always have matching keying. are you sure you don't have the 8pin for the gpu on hand and try to use that?

They are keyed in a way that doesn't allow them to be plugged into the wrong connector or the wrong way round. If it fits, it's right.
