Current system:

Intel core i5 4760k (+custom cooler)

Gigabyte Z87x-D3H

MSI Gtx 1070 gaming X 8gb

16GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ram

Seasonic Gserie 650W

My plan is upgrading my 'old' cpu (and thus also my old motherboard) with some new high speed DDR4 memory.

The question is: Is it worth it?

I play (very high intensive CPU) games (on 1080p):
Ages of singularity, Total War games, BF1, ...

In most of the games i get around 55-60fps on maxed out settings. However on big battles in Total War games i have around 35-40fps.

On  campaign map it even goes under 35fps somethimes.

I live in the Benelux, so the prices here are bit higher than in the USA/Canada.

Did some quick look in the local hardware webshop.

So it will cost me around €700.

(If somebody knows a better/cheaper motherboard, plz let me know)

How much of an improvement should i get?

(will be using my gtx1070 in my fractal R4 case.)

get an I7 4790K and depending on the cooler, you could get a new one and then overclock it. i dont think the 7700K is enough of an improvement to justify the cost to upgrade

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

What's your budget for the upgrade parts?

Well to be honest, i wouldnt want to go higher than €700.
i could easily throw €1000 against it, but than again, i dont think the upgrade/price ratio would be good.

I was maybe thinking of overclocking my CPU (because my CPU is bottlenecking me in some games) but i dont have a clue how do you do that.
i would like to know, but yeah ... dont want to blow up the cpu.

I'm not willing to buy another GPU card.
Their is no need to. My currect CPU is bottlenecking my GPU.
It is sometimes on 100% load, while the GPU is on 70%.

So i need some good motherboard, an new i7 cpu and a decent airflow silent cooler.

then save yourself some cash and get the I7 4790K and an NH-d14 or some nice 240 AIO if you can fit it. like honestly. the I7 7700K isnt worth the cash seeing as you need new RAM, a new motherboard the chip and a cooler. you can get an I7 4790K for as low as $140 on ebay. if you just refuse to get something for your current platform then get what you selected and get either an NH-D14 or NH-D15 depending on what fits your case
