Better Option for First Build

A 780 is a slightly slower 970. And a 970 is a slightly faster 1050 ti

Ironically, GPUs are the the area in which I am the least informed. I'm whittling away at parts for a first build of sorts. Nothing special, just a base level performance build used for 50-60 fps on most triple A titles. I noticed a large price difference between a GeForce gtx 780 and the 1050, the 780 being significantly greater. I was wondering why this was, my simple mind thinking the bigger number was better and all. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!
