heavy music editing requires quite some CPU horsepower, so given your budget i would go X99, or wait for X299 to drop maybe june? (it's a rumor, so don't quote me on that!)

what software are you using, some have GPU acceleration. My dad notices that for him more cores is better most of the time vs faster PPC (performance per core). he may have 1 thread that is core heavy and 10-30 threads that are not.

i thought X99 still outperforms AM4 in most multithreaded workloads. (thinking about those multicore Xeons specifically)

Yes, the 6900K > 1800X in basically all scenarios, but AM4 is worlds cheaper.

the budget is up to 2000, which should be enough for a 6900K, but IMO an 1800X + good GPU for less than 1,500 is better than 6900K + low end GPU for 1,750

@The Benjamins cakewalk sonar , Do I need a gpu? more cores? whats the deal?

the recommended requirements are kinda low, I looked online and users recommend more ram. so I would go with a 1800x, 16GB+(32GB would be a nice target), low end gpu like a RX460 if you don't have any laying around, and a NVME boot drive with SSD or HDD secondary storage for extra space.

I don't see a point in x99 unless you really need better single core performance (which I doubt, and all this should be easy to do with that budget. also I recommended a 1800x assuming you are not going to overclock if you are then get a 1700 or 1700x and save a bit of money. I can't put a parts list right this second maybe later in the day.
