Upgrading Computer parts [Need Help]

Hello,

My Current specs are okay as it is however, one of my family members is in need of a computer as theirs broke down. Therefore I am giving some parts of mine and purchasing new parts.
Im planning to SLI a 1080 STRIX. However, Ive been looking at processors that I want.

 

The processors Ive been stuck is the i7-6850K and the i7-7700K


I'm not sure what to really do and if running the graphic cards on x16 instead of x8 or if this even makes a slight difference?

I do some video editing, will be working on 3D Models later on as I'm going to my second year in Uni. I might later on get RAM Upgrades. Also, I love gaming. 

I wont get any PCIe Drives such as M.2 drives or sound cards in the future.

Would love to get some help ! Hope I have given as much info as possible.

You should get the 6850K, more PCIe lanes will allow you to run both GPUs at 16x and more cores will help you with rendering. However, the 7700K is faster for gaming, but you will have to delid it to overclock it to 5GHz (which is where it shines)

Does running both GPU's at 16x, Will that make a big difference then running them on 8x?

If you edit videos or render, get a i7-6800K 5820K or a Ryzen 7 CPU, the physical cores will help more than the hyperthreaded ones of the i7-7700K

I'd say Ryzen in this case tho, unless the 3D software being used is heavily single threaded.

 

Also, to answer OP, x8 vs x16 currently has pretty much no difference and will continue to for probably at least another 5 years.

But gaming is a priority for him and Ryzen struggles in games....

It doesn't "struggle", though it is a bit behind.

 

It also depends a lot on exactly how much gaming they'll do, but if 3D modeling is gonna be done quite a bit and the application is multi threaded I'd still say Ryzen. If it's gaming 90% of the time the Intel.

Lets stick to Intel for now. Should I go for a 6850K?

No, I'd say 5820k or 6800k. Extra pcie lanes aren't worth it.

3466 is around 5-10%.

 

We can interpolate that 3200 would be more 10% ish. Maybe 10-15.

 

Plus ram can be overclocked, especially if it has Samsung b-die.

Only in rendering. For gaming the i7 is 10-15% faster.
