Spanning a partition over two hhd

what file system and partiting setup? are you using lvm?

If by "spanning" you mean create something like a JBOD array, then you have to reformat the drives to turn them into a JBOD array.

 

Otherwise I would imagine you could just plop in the drive, format, and proceed as normal. If you want to avoid needing to specify a particular drive, you could use symlinks on one drive to access the other's contents.
