Someone I know is trying to sell their asus maximus 7 formula mobo, with 8gb of ram (not sure of exact specifics on memory), and an i7-4790k. He's priced it at $400 USD. After looking up the prices and doing research and such I think that it's a pretty good deal. considering the motherboard is a $400 motherboard by itself.

I'm just looking for another opinion before I dedicate $400 to something that might not be a good decision.

I'm not super familiar with the parts themselves but if it is a good deal and you trust that the parts aren't damaged then I would go for it. Part's rarely go bad, and when they do it is usually because of misuse or they are just outdated but all of that sounds like it would be fine

the guy actually still uses his computer. he just wants to sell his older stuff so that he can sort of downgrade to a laptop? or something? i don't know. all i know is that the motherboard alone is $415 when i looked it up, and the processor is just under that price range right now, just because they don't make it anymore.

the mobo used is $275 or less (depends on accessories included)

the CPU is $275 or less on how ragged on it was

the RAM is $65

so if isn't totally roasted on voltage, it'd be a buy it now for me.

I personally wouldn't buy it to be honest. It is a good deal if we weren't days away from Ryzen 5 release. For the same amount of money, you can probably get a good motherboard, 16gb ram and Ryzen 5 1600. That would be a new 6 cores/12threads system using DDR4 as opposed to a used 4/8 thread system from 3 years ago with DDR3 and half the memory.

Even if the ryzen build would be better, i could always repurpose the hardware for something else, like upgrading my dell poweredge server from 2007, that i still use. or just replacing the server all together.

Yes but the same argument applies, only if you go ryzen then you would have a 6 core, 12 thread, ddr4 to repurpose as a server later. I can understand getting the used parts if ryzen was months away or even weeks away but it's 3 days away.

If it was me, I would want the best parts my money can buy and I feel a new 6 core system with ddr4 is better than a used, 3 year old 4 core system with ddr3 if both will cost me the same amount. But that's just my thought process, at the end of the day it's your money and you should do what your most comfortable with.

if you'are a gamer...this is better than a ryzen build of the same price...guaranteed.

get a somewhat decent cooler and clock this to 4.6ghz and you have a very good gaming CPU.

I personally don't see it, I don't think the draw backs can justify the little bit extra performance you might see. Here is a link with leaked benchmarks from Ryzen 5: https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2017/04/05/amd-ryzen-5-1600-review-leak-200-cpu-beats-350-intel-core-i7-7700k/#4c7963c91784

In the tests you can see it against a 4790k too(at stock). Considering it's used, we don't really know how hard it was pushed by the original owner or at what voltage but we can assume it was over clocked since no one buys that kind of motherboard to run at stock speeds. If it's gonna coat the same, I honestly don't see how buying the used parts is the better deal.

I see your point now. I think a ryzen 5 build would be a good upgrade to my i7-870 and 8gb of ddr3. But I also need to find a new case, cause the one i have right now is from my zero dollar pc build, which is actually my current desktop rig. So, i would be going with the ryzen 5 1600, some ram, a new mobo, and a new case. And I have a case already picked out.

I'm kind of thinking outloud at this point, but I do have to agree that the ryzen build would be better than purchasing used hardware. And the ryzen 5 1600 comes with a cooler, right?

Ehhh Asus rog motherboard's dont usually have longevitiy and 400 bucks seems a little bit high for an i7 from 4 years ago. Why not just buy a Ryzen R5 for 260 and a motherboard and double the ram for the same price? Considering Ryzen has the same IPC as haswell gaming performance will be the same or similar

I've decided to go with the ryzen stuff instead. as some other people have described to me almost exactly what you just said.
