Hello,

I would like to know what speed DDR4 I should go for. The rest of the system will be a 6900K + 1080Ti + 960 PRO boot drive, and will be used to game at WQHD resolution, but mostly for 3D rendering/painting/sculpting. I am planning to go with 32 or 64gb of ram, but I am confused as to which speed to choose. At what point would I stop seeing significant improvments?

Thanks

Why the 6900K? The 1800X is just as good and costs just $500...

Oh, ok. You should get 3000MHz DDR4, it is pretty cheap right now...

Also was going to say, using a ryzen build right now, hes not going to be able to overclock (most likely) what he can on his intel board just do to Ryzen being still too new. Most users aren't getting about 2666 Stable (Myself included).

I would rather agree on what we share, than fight on what we don't. - Myself

I agree with that. big render projects can use quite a bit of RAM so go 32 for now, but leave room to ramp up to 64 if you find you need to.

And how's the performance difference between 3000MHz, and 4000MHz, for example. Does it, even if barely, justify going for it, or is 3000MHz enough for most cases?

He's talking about ram speed. get the right RAM and you can get 3200 MHz on it, and a Liquid Cooler you should be able to OC to 4.0 easily. Does 4GHz RAM exist?

Adding the RAM to my loop was something I was considering, mostly for cosmetic purposes, but I don't really feel like voiding warranties just to remove heatspreaders

I mean you should just sell the motherboard and save at least 450$ depending on what you sell the motherboard for... There is no reason to not consider AMD just because you dont' wanna move away from intel.

Unsure what power supply to pick?

There are very few reasons to not consider AMD:

  1. Intel specific technologies
  2. Quad channel DDR4
  3. 128GBs of RAM

But I can't think of more reasons :P

Cas latency hits you hard at higher frequencies assuming your memory controller can even run it. Get 3000-3200Mhz, it's the sweetspot.

Cas19, so for gaming they're shit as well

Higher latency than a 3200Mhz Cas14 kit

idk

So I guess I will go with 3200MHz, since they only cost 10€ more per 16GB kit over the 3000MHz kits. Many thanks to everyone that has replied

Which is fine.

So what I am saying is that most people are not able to get a stable ram overclock above 2666 on most Ryzen builds (exceptions exist, but I am running a 1700x and get get above that stably, least right now) And with Ryzen it absolutely matters. Since the cores will take advantage of as much ram as you can feed it, it has a direct impact on performance and speed.
