im currently running FX6300 - with Gigabyte FX 990 D3 ( the blue one not the UD3 black one). corsair 100iV2, R9 280X

1.3V      getting  4.5mhz  ram 1866 running  at 1996mhz   - I did have it at 4.8 but the board throttles a bit after that ( and 5mhz for about 5mins) - seems the sweet spot is 4.5 for temps and volts

and its been like this for 3yrs - runs well good, I paid $100 for the board 3yrs ago, -

the Gigabyte FX 990 D3 has done we well and for a fair price

Unless you mean the gaming carbon 970a msi mobo i wouldn't recommend it, with the regular msi 970 gaming mobo i wouldn't take the cpu past 4.2-4.4, that depending if the cpu suffers from voltage leakage or not, by changing the thermal pads you could then go up to a max of  4.7 ghz which is what i consider the limit on this board, and even that with cooling the vrm's.

Ahh, Just checked and you're right the MSI isn't as good an overclocker as Asus or Gigabyte, My bad.

The Asus as you suggested seems to be the better bang for buck motherboard for overclocking :)
