i have a laptop with a 2.5" hdd in it (standard size for a laptop) i wanted to know if i could plug it into my desktop pc so i could clone the drive to a 850 evo sdd or is there a way i can do it on the laptop as it only has 1 sata port ie can it be done via usb (i have a sata to usb cable for a old hdd i use as my "usb stick" for uni) would rather do it without having to fuck about with my desktop though

Yes it will work just fine if you put it in your pc and clone the drive - i do this frequently

NOTE: just make sure that your pc doesnt boot to the laptop hdd first

after plugging it into your pc go into your bios and just double check to see that your correct boot drive is booting first

you could use a sata to usb adapter and then boot a thumbdrive containing something like hirens and clone from there. Acronis and some other companies have bootable cloning tools

do i need 3 storage devices ie 1 to run the pc and then the drive i want to clone from and then the drive i want to clone to
