Big upgrade criticism

Pretty much the thread's title.

For gaming (2560x1440) and everyday use. Trying to set up something that will last ~2.5-3 years.

Budget is either current or lower. ($2500 CAD before taxes -- roughly 1875$ US)

I already have two SSDs. (256 for Windows and some games, 512 for games)

I know my CPU is probably fine, but the 7700k seems cheap if I sell my current one. Also always hated my Rampage IV (bugs mostly, shortcomings) so.

MSI is placeholder for non-FE MSI Gaming X.

What Case?

Other that that it seems fine.

But why not get a 6-core Ryzen with fast RAM, which preforms very well even in gaming, and gives you more raw power?

I would wait for the AIB models of the 1080ti personally.. and as above consider a ryzen 5 or 7 instead.

I agree that you should wait for custom 1080ti models to get better cooling. Regarding the CPU, if your concern is purely gaming the 7700k is fine, otherwise the suggestion with ryzen is valid.

r5 is more than enough for everyday use and gaming so its worth it spending more on the gpu

it will be the same with r7 just with less cores

so single core performance will be the same

This isn't necessarily true. L2 cash will most likely be different. Also as the silicon they are made of was rejected for r7 chips overclocking may be more of an issue. With the exception of the 1600x, the max boost clock speeds are 300-600 mhz lower than the r7 line. So even if the r5 overclock as well as the r7's you will still be slower with a maximum OC of 200 mhz.

I know there have been sites that have disabled cores to simulate an r5, however the reputable sites that have stated that this is only a rough estimate and that we should expect somewhat different results once r5 launches.

Phanteks Primo.

Isn't Ryzen slower in games to 7700k? New contradictory benchmarks?

Yeah I must have missed/misread that part, my bad. Just didn't want someone spending money on the founders editions when they can have better cooling and possibly better performance than founders with a slight wait.

Regarding the Ryzen discussions here, depends on the OPs usage as to what would be best suited of course, but the Ryzen chips should be good all-round chips anyway with more of a slant towards workloads, whereas i7 would be (according to benchmarks so far) the better gaming CPU. Personally I would still go with Ryzen anyway as it's such early days for the gaming performance, and given a little time to catch up with optimizations in the gaming area the Ryzen CPUs could be the better choice if you're only talking 5-10fps difference on an average 120fps 1080p ultra settings for example.

There's good arguments both for and against using Ryzen for gaming builds, but unless that is all you're going to do on the PC, IMO you might be better off with a Ryzen 1700 instead of a 7700K... I personally don't know many people that ONLY use a PC for gaming.

Keep in that is release day benchmarks, it has already caught up a chunk. 7700k is better at this time, but I think the difference is worth it for what you gain in other apps/workloads. Also keep in mind that it is very early days for Ryzen and more optimizations will be made.

Its not a mainstream guy, and the games are all CPU dependant. Also take into account that the 7700k whilst clocked at 5ghz is using  3200mhz vs the 3600mhz of the Ryzen, but once things settle down, Ryzen is looking good

I don't really do anything else but Internet (Reddit, message boards, YouTube) & gaming.

Memory wise, any notable gains compared to 3200mhz? (If I keep the 7700k)

nah anything over 3Ghz doesn't provide any extra benefit for intel.

Should I get 32GB? Mass Effect Andromeda apparently uses 16GB. Not sure whether it's a trend setter.

Looked quickly and Star Citizen & Shadow of Mordor 2 also have the same requirement.

Board remains the same so far.

3000mhz instead of 3200mhz?

3000mhz is $209.97 while 3200mhz is $264.97.  Both CAS 15.

CAS 14 3000mhz is $274.99, 3200mhz is $274.97
