Hey so I plan to build a really cheapo server to run sap and stuff and so far I've picked out a mobo, cpu, ram, and a rack. I am having a difficult time finding a chassis to store it all tho. I want to keep the build under $500 (US) and so far everything comes out to about $250 but I want to have maximum spending for storage. Btw I'm using openstack to run it all since I'm planning to have many instances and any recommendations for a PSU would b greatly appreciated. These are my current parts:

Mobo: supermicro x8dte-f

Cpu: xeon e5620 (2 of these obviously)

Ram: 32gb of Kingston ecc registered memory

If you making a rack server, id just get something like a dell r710, its cheaper than going diy, and you normally get a better system(hot swap psu, better impi, more pcie and ram and hdd.

You are right, but it is also not as fun as building a system yourself and also it is hard to adjust something in the future if you want to change things up. For example the limitation of drivebays, but also other things like PCIE slots are limited in these systems. The r710 is also powerhungry and pretty loud. With a custom system you can adress these issues better.

Yeah that's one of the few reasons I want to build I myself but I can't find any rack mount cases that are cheap, majority of what I'm finding are around $300 which is waaayyy too much for a case in my opinion. Power is also not that much of an issue for me because I have solar.
