Hey guys

I'm looking at building a home server or a NAS to store work files, movies and just random documents and general stuff. It needs to be accessible by at least two people and have high transfer speeds.

Can anyone link me a video on how to go about building one and setting up the software or a thread what I can read how to do this.

Thanks guys :)

Just wondering what you mean by "high transfer speeds". Typically, the limiting factor for home NAS is the network, which tends to be 1Gbps or less. If you're wanting over that, you're looking at investing an awful lot of money, even if you go for two direct connect connections.

If it's just to store files and you're fine with 1Gbps, best option is to just buy something from the likes of Asustor, QNAP or Synology and follow their setup process.

The high speeds are for my brother, he's an animator and demands he has high transfer speeds and needs more storage. He said he wants them to match his SSD speeds

Then you'll be needing 10Gbps networking. The cheapest switch I know of is one from Asus for about $700 I think, plus a few hundred for each of the NICs for the PCs. That's for 10Gbps ethernet. You can do it cheaper with direct connecting SFP+ but it's a bit more complicated to set up.

You'll also be needing to build or buy a system that isn't a dedicated NAS, as none of them (as far as I know) have 10Gbps networking.

that will not happen

ssd are fast , networks are slower

Not true, networks can easily faster than SSD's currently, just a matter of cost.

Not really true. Networks are faster (or have higher bandwidth to be more accurate) but cost a lot. There's things like 40 Gigabit infiniband which is used as a (relatively) inexpensive networking solution for businesses.

Price is around £500 gbp max I can go is £600 but preferably under 500

Not happening I'm afraid. You can make the NAS with that, but the network equipment required alone will be over that even used. If you go for new RJ45 10Gbps, you're looking at over £1000 for the networking alone

yes, my statement was general about LAN networks (home networks) , not enterprise standard networks like infiniband

Don't make general statements like "networks are slow" then.

I got 2 10 Gbps SFP+ NIC's + an SFP+ cable for a total of like $70 on Ebay

They're much harder to get in the UK, at least at a decent price they are. OP would likely have to spend over £100 per NIC and £20+ on the cable from what i've managed to find on eBay
