Are there any custom 1070s/1080s with a built in USB 3.1 controller that have a USB-C port on the back and output one of their displays as DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C?

I can't imagine the loss of bandwidth equal to a 1x link would be a big killer for performance since most cards can run over an 8x link without much of a loss in performance.

Are there other limiting factors at hand?

I'd love to have a one cable solution linking my desktop to my monitor, and then running a bunch of accessories with the built in hub.

Nope. Not yet, but probably something will be coming soon with like 6-8 DP over USB C or 3 Thunderbolt 3 passthroughs from mobo

I originally considered Thunderbolt 3, but that doesn't seem super viable. Thunderbolt 3 requires a special motherboard header connection in addition to the PCIe lanes, and most motherboard's (even those with a thunderbolt 3 port) don't come with that header.

USB3.1 is a more viable option because you can either have a header cable run off your card to the board, or you can just include a controller on the card itself and trade some PCIe bandwidth.

I meant that that would be a nice thing to have on new GPUs, 11-series and Vega by which time VGA should (finally) die and DVI will be dying out

DisplayPort does have an option to use USB on its auxiliary channel, but nobody uses it that way.

Plus you'd have to get monitor manufacturers to get on board with this. Few of them even bother with DisplayPort's daisy chaining.

It's only at 1Mb/s though so it's not like you can do anything useful over it.

I would *much* rather see USB-C added to graphics cards, than DisplayPort with sideband USB. Either way you'd still need a USB controller on the card anyways.

I still remember those old Creative Audigy sound cards with firewire on it and yet these days new sound cards don't have built in USB when some headphones are USB.

Which honestly I don't see manufacturers wanting to do, because again, you also have to get monitor manufacturers to do something about it. Getting even two companies to agree on something tends to be a miracle and a half.

USB headphones act like their own sound card, making it a moot point to have a sound card in the first place.

thus why when anyone having a sound card need to look at the damn specs on their headphones.

Monitor makers are already supporting DP alt mode. Dell, Lenovo, LG, and Acer all have monitors that hook up with USB-C and can even charge your laptop if you have a USB-C laptop.

In fact, I have one such monitor, hence why I'm looking for a graphics card to pair with my monitor.

Ah, well shows you how far ahead of the curve I am. :P

But nah, I still don't see graphics card manufacturers adding USB to their graphics cards. DisplayPort and HDMI have a far wider user base and people will put up with using another cable to connect to their monitor's USB hub, if they even do that (because you know, twitch gamers think connecting to a hub rather than directly adds significant amounts of input lag). Plus logistical headaches ("Oh great, now we have to stock USB controllers and Type C Plugs, throw in a converter or a cable for it, and now we have to support it").

And also, if you have to ask on a random forum whose owner likes to cover random crap and said random crap hasn't popped up, it probably doesn't exist. At least that's what I'd like to think.
