Elon Musk says Tesla may build electric pickup truck modeled after Ford F-150

Tesla may one day take on the likes of Ford and Dodge and produce its own pickup truck. That's according to CEO Elon Musk, who made the "announcement" during off-the-cuff remarks at Business Insider event in New York City. Musk was asked whether Tesla has considered building commercial fleet trucks for companies like UPS and FedEx. He responded that the potential market for such a vehicle was too limited, but said an electric truck aimed at consumers could very well be in the company's future.

Tesla's CEO didn't shy away from mentioning the tough competition his company would face if it were to pursue such an idea; in fact, he suggested that Tesla's truck could be modeled after Ford's best-selling F-150 pickup. Musk didn't delve into any other details, and said that Tesla isn't likely to undertake such a project for at least five years. Before that, the company is hoping to kick off production of its crossover Model X in 2014 and introduce a truly mass-market electric car by 2017.
