Where did I go wrong?

Go to solution Solved by PrimeSonic,

Found the problem.

It seems in the many wrenches to my plans while assembling the loop, I connected the outlet to the wrong port.

So today I finally turn on my PC with the newly installed custom water-cooling loop. Leak testing took a while so I'm just seeing it this morning.

Pictures here of the loop.

There's a 360, 240, and 120 radiator, all by Hardware Labs. The CPU and  full-cover GPU blocks are by XSPC. The pump-reservoir is also by XSPC but has an EK  pump in it.

My temps are obscenely high at idle. Help!

GPU hovering around 50. CPU at 68 and climbing.

What could have gone wrong?

A lot of different things could've gone wrong. Is the pump pumping? CPU block seated correctly? Did you check if the liquid is flowing at the correct rate?

Pump is pumping. I can hear it. As much as I wanted quieter operation, I tried cracking the pump speed and tends continued to rise.

I don't have any way of checking flow rate, and with opaque rules, it's hard to tell.

Well, it could be something buffing it in the OS, but otherwise my best guess would be thermal paste if it's related outside of the software.

I used Artic Silver and I want to believe I applied it correctly, but unless it's that a single D5 pump can't handle all these components, it might be the blocks.

The d5 can handle that loop no problem. Did you make sure to bleed the loop?

oh and not sure how glad the pump is about being horizontal. Try putting your case on the front so you're sure the pump is being fed.

As best as I could. But it looks like the most likely candidate for what's  going on. I'll start here first since it's the only thing I can do now that doesn't require complete disassembly.

Hope you didn't kill your pump.:)

It heated up a bit but it seems fine.

Now with that resolved, I'm wondering why the fluid isn't reaching the blocks this time.

You need a port open to push the air out

I was hoping that the bubbles would make their way into the reservoir.

It has a plug up top that I've opened to let air out.

But I don't really have a dedicated bleed port in the loop and all the plugs I have available loosen are no where need the air. Or at least, they push out water anytime I try to loosen them.

That pump is intended to only be operated in the upright position.

Turns out, I just couldn't tell that the fluid had already made its way into the blocks because I'm using clear fluid. Honestly, next time, I'm going for a colored fluid so I can actually see when the damn thing touches the blocks.

My idle temps are hovering around 24C now which to me is clear evidence that the loop is working. I'll be stress testing shortly but suffice to say, my problem really was the dumbass thing I did with the ports.

It's a long story as to how I got to that problem in the first place, but I will at least thank you for your wise words in my hour of need.

After extensive testing

1) I agree, this pump really should only be used in the upright position.

but

2) I've managed to get it filled enough to the point where the air gap isn't touching the inlet port, making sideways operation possible without issue.

I'll be keeping an eye on it since the windowed side panel faces me on the desk. And if that air gap starts to get too close to the inlet, as more air bubbles make their way to the reservoir, I'll fill it back up again.

You're welcome. Glad you got it working
