Soooooo I work at the IT service in my company and I've been on a stroll and looked through our old stuff... And I found two Xeon E5645s. And since I can get them for free, I'm wanting to throw together a build for them.

Any suggestions? I don't really know how I plan to use them yet, I literally just found them and jumped online... I might try some light gaming on them, since just about anything is better than the craptop I have rn, maybe I'll throw them into a server... Idk yet, suprise me people ^^

A server could definitely put those CPUs to use. You could put ESXi on the server and then install some VMs, you could use them for a Plex server as well.

can you get a mobo for them? and preferably also some ram.

as for things to do with them:

- a badass home server

- a numbercrunching workstation

- <insert number here> gamers 1 cpu :P

- ...

i wouldnt really pick them out as a super beefy gaming system, mostly because the single core performance is rather lacking, and there's only so much that core count can make up in that sense. that said, it may just be better than a craptop :D

Crunch dem numbers. I can get pretty much whatever is on the internet, as long as it doesn't totally break my bank ^^

How much RAM etc. would you shoot for? I know this is difficult since there's no real use case here yet...

if you're going the server side of things, as much as economically sensible, if you're going the gaming side of things, 6x2GB? 12x1GB? (since both processors are 3-channel memory -> 6 channels)
