Heyo newbie incoming!

Im in a bit of a pinch here, i really need to upgrade my cpu for school

since there is going to be quite some heavy workloads like 3D rendering and potentially huge PSD files and so going on.

I've been rocking a Pentium G3240 for about 4 years now i think and before that just other pentiums,

i feel as if i probably should upgrade by now since i use my computer just about every day for commissions and studying.

I'd also love to be able to play games above low settings :c

As mentiond before, my current CPU: Intel Pentium G3240.

The two ones i've been ogling for a while: Core i5-4460 and Core i7-4790.

I would naturally go for the Core i5-4460 any day otherwise since it's 220$ compared to the 370$ for the Core i7-4790.

Im not on a specific budget or anything but it'd be great if i was able to spend less than necessary since moneys a bit tight!

*Edit*

System specs

  • MBD: MSI B85M-E45
  • CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU G3240 @ 3.10GHz
  • RAM: 12GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650
  • PSU: Cooler Master 500W
  • STORAGE: 120GB SSD & 2TB HDD
  • CASE: Some Cooler Master Case

I would avoid getting such a old chipset at this point.

The i5 7400 is for the same price, albeit having a more expensive motherboard. But would greatly increase your upgrade options and bottle necking in the future.

Can`t you find a used 4790 or even a 4770 for cheaper than 370$? If so, that would be a great option to have.

well based on what you are going to be using your computer for you would definitely benefit form getting the i7 over the i5. the real question is whether its worth the price increase in your eyes.

I think it'd be worth it if there was significant differences!

Then an i7 seems to be the way to go atleast, now to figure out wich one would be the best and compatible out off all of them o.O

Xeon E3-1241 v3 this is basically an i7 4770 and it is cheaper so you may want to look into this. it is compatible with your motherboard also.

Ryzen 5, when it releases will be a great choice if you do CPU intensive tasks on your computer. Also all their tiers are fully unlocked for overclocking if you like that stuff.

For Intel's side, the i5 7400, doesn't get bottlenecked by any graphics card, a solid choice however lacking firepower if you would compare it to ryzen in terms of multi core.

*Notice 7500 & 7400 are the same price on amazon now.

Ryzen's lowest tier costs $169, $30 cheaper than the intel i5 7500.

Also i5 prices will drop even if you don't want to get ryzen, so i guess waiting would be the best thing to do now.
