As an avid Rebel T1i user since 2012, I've had a chance to try a few entry level lenses, and bought a few.

Currently, I own the 18-55mm kit lens, the 50mm f1.8 plastic fantastic, and the 55-250mm Image Stabilized telephoto.

The kit lens is still the most versatile, but I usually leave the 50mm f1.8 attached because of how sharp it is for it's low price.

Having the telephoto is nice for when I shoot landscapes though, and it's better than the 75-300mm without Image Stabilization.

The most important thing though is finding out what she wants to take photos of. People? Landscape? Products for sale?

Another question though - how is her lens screwed? I actually dropped my camera with the 50mm lens attached a while back...

It popped it out of the plastic housing, and nothing broke except the plastic copper ribbon cable controlling the electronics.

Bought a new one from eBay for $12, resoldered it myself, and bam! Work's as good as new.

That's the first lens I ever bought. The short answer is no. I have owned it for ~11 years and have used it probably less than 10 times. I'd sell it hadn't it been dirt cheap.

The longer answer, what does she use the camera for? Its unlikely she will have developed interests she shoots etc. if she's just starting out. My advise would be to look at a 50 1.8. Its much more versatile and more beneficial for a beginner and should be quite cheap as well. It's common for beginners to buy tele lenses and then not use them simply because wider angles are much more versatile. So unless its a real bargain like you can get it for £20, then don't bother. if its around ~£60 then just spend another £10 and get a used 50 1.8. The newest version is actually surprisingly good, in terms of sharpness and amazingly build quality.
