GTX 1050Ti

I'm looking to get a new laptop, the one I'm looking at has a GTX 1050TI in it. I want it to replace my desktop since I'm not home much. So  I want to know how it compares to my current card?  Which is the xfx r9 290x double dissipation 8gb.

1050 ti is definitely slower than your 290x. Pros would be power consumption and it plays well in 1080p. If you only play valve games on 1080p, I guess getting a laptop with that gpu would work.

For 1080p you're unlikely to notice a real difference, especially on a laptop. Also, you'll have it with you to enjoy it.

Incorrect, the 1050Ti is just below 1060 - which directly competes with the 480, which is on par with the 290X..

Definitely slower, but not 'Valve games' slow. 

It's equal to about a 770-780/960 from last couple generations, more than enough for lower setting 1080p gaming. Runs pretty much every game at med-high 1080p, and don't bother with MSAA since it is such a small screen.

"Just below" is again almost double. You can compare gaming benchmarks here if you'd like.

Definitely slower, but not 'Valve games' slow.

Please consider that he mentioned 1050ti to be on a laptop and there is a difference between a desktop 1050 ti vs a laptop 1050 ti.

That's against 390X, a newer and faster card, not the 290x. There is a difference between the two, with the actual GPU being very similar, but with the 390X having very good memory bandwidth compared to the 290X, which makes it shine in games that are memory-heavy like ROTR. 

Ironically, you picked the page where the 290X is not tested. It's a good 20 FPS behind the 290X in GTAV for example.

No, there isn't really.. With Pascal most of the laptop parts are similar to their desktop parts. 

The laptop 1050TI has the same amount of CUDA cores and a higher clockspeed to make up for thermal throttling if it does occur.

Every review will have its outliers; take the results as a whole. In the majority of games, the 390x approaches double the performance of the 1050 Ti. The 290X may not be quite as fast as the 390X, but it's very close (no question <10%) what with it being the same GPU. Then factor in the laptop throttling of the 1050 Ti coupled with the overclocking headroom of a desktop card, and I have no problems with saying that the 290X is almost twice as fast as the 1050 Ti.

Laptop 1050Ti is clocked a good 200Mhz higher with same CUDA and memory and higher boost clocks.. 

It's not double, it's maybe a good 25-35% faster, and that isn't an outlier this time. In some games it is double, others not much at all.

I took the ratio of 390X to 1050 Ti performance across all games, and it's nowhere near 25-35%.

I'll use the weighted 50-50 DX11/DX12 average for the sake of comparison.

 

The 390X is 74% faster than the 1050 Ti.

The 290X is 10% slower than the 390X.

The XFX 290X overclocks 10%.

 

This leaves us with a desktop 290X 74% faster than a desktop 1050 Ti. Then consider the following, which I'm not going to add to that number because they're not as easily quantifiable:

 

Laptop GPU's tend to be slower than their desktop counterparts. (Compare them all in userbenchmark)(General trend in notebookcheck)

Higher clockspeeds that are thermally unsustainable don't translate to any meaningful performance increase. If anything, they make things throttle faster.

Laptop GPU's are often paired with weaker CPU's and often cause their CPU's to throttle. 

OP has the 8GB 290X, while the one used in reviews is 4GB.

AMD GPU's have seen driver improvements since summer that have increased performance in a not-insignificant way. 

 

 

So no, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see OP's 290X performing almost 2x better in most games than a laptop 1050 Ti.

Ok thanks for the replys, so in other words it's a relatively big down grade. Another route I was think of going is just finding a laptop with a decent cpu and getting a external gpu dock and using my card. But I'm having a hard time finding one within my price range that has a thunderbolt connection on it. Does anyone know of some decent laptops that have a good cpu and thunderbolt port. My price range is $700 to $850.
