VRAM of a GPU does not dictate how fast the GPU is. With that in mind, some games may require or utilize higher than 4GB of VRAM, and thus the Fury or Fury X may bottleneck.

Personally, I'd say an RX480 is great, or if you want better graphics, grab a GTX 1070.

I've enjoyed binge watching the linus tech tips shows on youtube for the past week, and I decided to build my own pc after a craigslist seller flaked.
I was wondering if you would recommend a different graphics card as it is the only component I have not yet purchased. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/K6BxPs
I have only spent $420 usd on everything so far, between mail in rebates from newegg and used parts from ebay.

1, I would like to spend between $300 usd max. used is helpful if you know which ones are turned over often?

2, I want my pc to be VR ready, for when I can afford a headset. I hope to get better performance than the green threshold by nvidia's vr readiness bench, If only slightly so I am not limited to only the current vr games that are out so far.

3, I am starting on my 50" samsung smart tv @60hz, however If I get back into games like COD I will invest in a 120/144hz monitor. Also I believe VR headsets run 2 separate 90hz 1080p screens at a time?

4, I have a keyboard, mouse, and OS.

5, I am upgrading because, although I love my lenovo 11e, it doesn't like to handle more than 10 tabs on chrome, including not being able to game at all including epsxe.. I used to have a desktop 2nd gen i7 something with 8gb ram and gtx+9800, and I enjoyed that greatly and even sold it for the same price as I bought it a year and a half later when I moved out for college.

TLDR; https://pcpartpicker.com/list/K6BxPs is this the correct graphics card for VR in this setup? >$300,

precisely, dalek thank you. I Thought I remember hearing that some VR games bottlenecked @ 5gb vram!

OK, so it looked like I was going with a rx480 until I checked the prices of the 1070s on ebay! It actually makes sense that people would be trying to get rid of their 1070s with all the new nvidia cards that came out after.. People just keep upgrading! Good for us!

As a 1070 owner I've never seen a game use more than 4GB of VRAM.

The Fury's memory speed/bus also allows it to move stuff to and from VRAM quite efficiently.

I would say go 1070 if you can fit it in your price range and you're fine with going used however.

Im going to do some bidding on the 1070s and possible end up with a rx480, if I do, what speed vram should I look for? I saw the tests of ram were best dollar/speed @ 1600mhz

but the first graphics card I was looking at, the rx470 had 996mhz, and the rx480 has 1.12mhz, both at 8gb.. for an extra $25?

I've been thinking it over and I've decided to go with a new rx480 black over a used 1070

because it has a $30 rebate (another one ugh)

and it comes with a free fan so I don't need to buy another one as I was planning on!

but MOSTLY because of the cooling system and stable lower temps!

I don't my rig breaking down before I get to VR!

Thank you guys for your help, and for pointing me in the right direction!
