In case ya didn't know, a 7970 and a 280X CAN crossfire.

I currently have a 7970 DCUII Ghz. Ed. and it runs pretty hot. I'm thinking of adding a 280X DCUII but I'm worried temps are going to be astronomical.

Thoughts?

I know the new cards run hotter but is this just a stupid idea for the performance gains?

how hot is hot? I idle at 57 and that's hotter than some cards at load, I don't give a fk

During games I see high 60s mid 70s

Ran furmark for a min or two and was seeing upper 70s low 80s

@Sarcasm ya they would be stacked. I could offset it with a cable

completely fine, as long as you're not running it 24/7 (even then low 80's is k)

I get to around the same 80-85 under load.

Error: 410

Depends. Does your board stack them cooler to PCB?

Shit, I hit high 60s at Furmark loads...

If they stack, I wouldn't unless you have stock coolers, which you don't. Second of all, doesn't the backplate on the DCIIs interfere? I swear it's taller than just a PCB.

I have a single 4890, stock clocked 850MHz, and I can reach 94 degrees in-game with a 15 degree ambient. GOML.

The 280X doesn't have a backplate

AFAIK,  it has to be 7970 on top of the 280X

I wouldn't recommend it regardless, unless you plan on a custom loop.

I could through a block on one of them....but that's too costly imo

What if I ghetto rig a fan to the side...

It's not even the ATi 4xxx or GeForce 4xx series... And I don't think a fan would help.

I don't think that was much of a competition, that was a landslide victory.

Maybe if I space the cards by using pci cables?

Well having space for the DCii to draw in air would definitely help. It's still going to be warmer than normal air going in though.

I'm expecting heat increase but I'm worried about how hot the 280 will get. That will bake the 7970
