GPU upgrade

Lucaz97

Hi LTT!  I need some advice from you guys!
So... as you can see in my signature my gpu is the black sheep in my system...

I'll try to explain my needs so that I can get the best advice on which gpu I should get, in the case I should.

I am studying engineering of computing systems in Milan, currently at my first year. When I play I play non demending games, and I really don't care about my fps in AOEIII... Also my monitors are not so good, but I am planning on upgrading them too in the future (ill probably stay on 1080p maybe 1440p). Now lets see what I do with my pc(GPU related), graphics design for the web, application UI design for Java and android applications, I may try to get into some game engine like Unity or Unreal.

I would like to get something that is going to last long, lets say 3 years maybe 4, in which my gaming demands will probably decrease (if they can get lower than this...) while the "working" tasks could increase...

Also, I don't know if VM's interfere with the GPU also when doing something not strictly GPU related.

My budget is around 200 euros, but this week a friend of mine is getting an update and he has a discount so if I decide to get it this week with his order i get around 20% discount.

I have looked up at some 1060s and 480s but I'm not sure if that is too much for my needs or not. I also looked up at some 1050tis and 470/60s but in those cases I wasn't sure they will last long enough...

Thank you for you advice

Luca

It doesn't seem like what you do is too intense, though if you want to stay future proof you should go for a 470 or 480. A 1050 ti isn't worth it compared to a 470, so either a 470 or 480 would be my pick. Especially since it could allow you to keep your GPU for a longer period of time.

Thank you, I've seen 470s with 8 gb and 480s with 4 gb

what do you think is the best price/perf ?

It really depends. 480 will perform better now but when stuff uses more than 4gb it will struggle. If you wanna go super future proof then a 470 8gb would be better but if you don't think you'll be doing stuff that uses a lot of vram a 480 would be better.

there is 9 euros difference between 470 8gb and 480 8 gb...

the 480 4gb would be 178.26

prices are in € and with the discount I mentioned before.

Rx 470 8gb probably isn't worth it for you considering the 8gb is only €9 more. I'd say it's between 470 4gb and 480 8gb. Is the graphics design and UI stuff you do relatively GPU intensive? And do you know if it eats up video memory or not? Right now it's kinda about whether or not you need the 8gb vram... I feel you get into game engine stuff you might want to go for the 8gb but otherwise it's probably not needed...

Thank you very much for your advice, I feel I'll probably go with the 480 8gb.

EDIT: is the nitro+ a good model ?
