So I found a great monitor which has two versions:

Edge-lit: €104.80

Backlit: €122.90

Since I'm on a budget, those type of price differences do matter.

Can someone explain me why Backlit is better than Edge-lit (At least, that's what I've heard) AND if it's actually worth the extra €18.-

The monitor is 1920x1080 @ 75Hz (Yes, at the native resolution I'm sure) if that matters.

Thanks!

Edge lighting is usually thinner and is less uniform with bleeding around the edges.

Also, you first say that backlit is more expensive, then you ask if edge lit is worth the extra $22?

What the heck?

Oops, meant it the other way lol. Edited the topic, thanks for pointing out.

What do you actually mean by Edge-lit being "less uniform"? Sorry english is not my native language.

Backlit is a generic term, edge-lit is a particular type of backlight style. The majority of displays use edge-mounted backlighting (edge-lit), so likely both of those displays are edge-lit.

Edge lit back lights use a diffuser to evenly spread the light across the display. Most of the time, the diffuser doesn't actually spread the light evenly.

Also a handy video to watch:

I should probably mention that I ASSUME that this version is not-back-lit, because it doesn't say it is backlit anywere.

(I hope it shows the text right on desktop, I'm on phone).

Wow that's very informative, I get it now. So the difference is actually just the black light being stopped with Edge-lit, and lighs getting turned off to make black with not-Edge-lit.

Okay so this link combined with @M.Yurizaki's comment, I don't know if I need the "full black" over "fake black".

Gotta sit down and think about that.

All LCDs are backlit. Edge-lit is a type of backlit display.

Unfortunately most LCDs are edge-lit. You can find array-lit LED displays which have the LED lights behind the LCD and some of them use local dimming to provide better blacks, but those tend to be ungodly expensive.

Unless you're going to view your monitor in pitch black or close to it most of the time, I would say back light bleeding of any sort isn't really a huge issue unless it's substantial.

You guys both want to say most LCD's are edge-lit? What type of LCD monitors do you two have then? And what could possible be the difference between these 2 monitors I showed the specs of in a previous post other than having different outputs?

aka, what makes that €18.- difference if both monitors are edge-lit?

Monitor 1: ASUS VP228TE

Monitor 2: ASUS VP228T

Well if I went by the spec pages...

  • VP228T has 250 cd/m^2 brightness while VP228TE has 200 cd/m^2
  • VP228T has a viewing angle of 170H/160V degrees while the VP228TE is 90H/65V degrees (not sure why it's this low)
  • VP228TE does not explicitly state it has HDCP support
